#UFchat – chat for urban fantasy writers

Transcript for July 24, 2010 – Definitions & Downside

We had a great first chat! It was very busy and the question/answer portions are a little tough to follow but it’s all there. (If I have time I will attempt to put just the direct questions to Stacia and answers by her in a separate post.) Without further ado, here is the transcript from our 1st chat today.
TOPIC: How do YOU define UF (in 140 characs or less)?
Including a special Q&A with Stacia Kane (@StaciaKane), author of the Downside Ghosts books being released back-to-back-to-back for June, July & August 2010. (Unholy Ghosts, Unholy Magic, City of Ghosts)

Note: I’m not sure why the times shown are wrong but the start time was 3pm PST/6pm EST.

10:04 pm thedragongem: Funny leapetra I read about vampires and minstrels. #UFchat

10:04 pm CameronHaleyUF: Rum and diet…what’s coffee? #UFchat

10:04 pm StaciaKane: My fucking cable/internet just went out due to severe thunderstorms #UFChat

10:05 pm RindaElliott: @UF_Chat Hi! I write UF & am represented by Miriam Kriss . Can only hang here a few minutes. Glad to see my fav genre in a chat! #UFchat

10:05 pm LaylaMessner: Hi, Layla here – veteran reader and budding author of YA UF #UFChat #UFChat

10:05 pm jflamingo2: Hi, I’ll be lurking around #UFchat to see what they’ll be saying since I’m curious.

10:05 pm deborahblake: Hi! I’m Deborah. I write all sorts of things (5 pubbed NF with Llewellyn) but my agent is currently shopping my UF series #UFchat

10:05 pm UF_Chat: @StaciaKane Oh no! Don’t worry – we got lots of discussing happening. Chime in when you can. #UFchat

10:05 pm StaciaKane: Am trying to see what I can do. Will update shortly. May go to free wi-fi place #UFChat

10:06 pm Jinxie_G: Hello all! #UFchat

10:06 pm UF_Chat: So what are people’s definitions of UF? In 140 characs or less. πŸ˜‰ #UFchat

10:06 pm theworldamongus: @UF_Chat OOps meant to add #UFChat to my last tweet. And that its a paranormal story taking place mostly in rural areas. there much better

10:06 pm HoodedMan: I write fiction about the deeper reality, no genre, all or none #ufchat http://bit.ly/bgunkS

10:06 pm LaylaMessner: Fantasy story set in the modern world. #UFChat

10:07 pm UF_Chat: @jimnduncan Absolutely – regular day Sat – regular time 3pm PST/6pm EST – every week. This is the historic 1st one. πŸ™‚ #UFchat

10:07 pm leapetra: Wondering if that is an orc working in Starbucks? my def. #ufchat

10:07 pm StaciaKane: Am on my way to BN, be on shortly. Sorry! #UFChat

10:07 pm rixshep: #UFchat – A1: To me, #UF is the intersection of fantasy worlds with our “real world” (tm/patent pending?). They can crossover & interact.

10:07 pm HC_Palmquist: To me, Urban Fantasy is a paranormal or fantastical story set in modern day, urban society. #UFchat

10:07 pm UF_Chat: @leapetra He he – love it! #UFchat

10:07 pm GargoylePhan: I write crime/thrillers, sci-fi, & horror, but a UF gargoyles novel is marinating in my head, right now just images, someday words #UFchat

10:07 pm CarolynCrane: Hey! Happy to see this #UFChat @StaciaKane and Downside rocks! Look! she’s brought down the internetz.

10:07 pm tasmin21: A story set in a modern setting, with supernatural/paranormal elements. #UFChat

10:08 pm valerievaldes: @UF_Chat What Layla said… fantasy set in the modern world. A step into fantasy from magical realism, say. #UFchat

10:08 pm UF_Chat: Our guest author is locating some wi-fi & will be on for Q&A shortly. In meantime keep the definitions coming! #UFchat

10:08 pm UF_Chat: RT @CarolynCrane: Hey! Happy to see this #UFChat @StaciaKane and Downside rocks! Look! shes brought down the internetz. #UFchat

10:08 pm GargoylePhan: I guess it’s obvious from my name that I’m a big fan of gargoyles ;-] #UFchat

10:08 pm InvasiveNotes: RT @HoodedMan: I write fiction about the deeper reality, no genre, all or none #ufchat http://bit.ly/bgunkS

10:08 pm Ben_Aaronovitch: The intersection between the fantastic and the contemporary – ish. #UFchat

10:09 pm theworldamongus: I should also mention I write fantasy novels revolving around gods falling in love with demons. #ufchat

10:09 pm HoodedMan: @deborahblake I like that definition, since it’s exactly what I’m writing about. But what does UF stands for? Urban… ? #UFchat

10:09 pm leapetra: Looking around the city and noticing that no one looks up, and that gargoyle moved. Or is that me? #ufchat

10:09 pm jimnduncan: Curious how urban has translated to any modern setting. Would think it meant city. #ufchat

10:09 pm JordanDrew: I like this definition. πŸ˜‰ RT @Ben_Aaronovitch: The intersection between the fantastic and the contemporary – ish. #UFchat

10:09 pm deborahblake: @HoodedMan urban fantasy #UFchat

10:10 pm CarolynCrane: So many great definitions! Ditto @rixshep @CameronHaleyUF, others. #UFchat

10:10 pm MarieIvarsson: RT @UF_Chat: Downside bks = Ghostbusters meets Escape From New York +punk rock s/track, black magic, drugs & a black 1969 Chevelle. Come discuss! #UFchat

10:10 pm GargoylePhan: My definition of UF … Supernatural and/or strange creatures in our modern world, I guess #UFchat

10:10 pm deborahblake: @jimnduncan Urban does mean city, but IMHO this definition now encompasses more & urban means “darker” #UFchat

10:10 pm tasmin21: Anymore, I think people see “urban” as a challenge. Like, what, you mean I can’t set it in some sleepy little town? #UFChat

10:10 pm snowppl: For me Urban Fantasy is fantasy in the presnt day setting. Magical realism is more ‘literary’ than UF #ufchat

10:11 pm Ben_Aaronovitch: @jimnduncan Not me, none of that rural stuff me. #ufchat

10:11 pm leapetra: City fantasy is different from country. having lived in both. City paranormal is more interesting. #ufchat

10:11 pm UF_Chat: @HoodedMan Urban fantasy. Primarily spec fiction set in urban location, usually modern day. #UFchat

10:11 pm JSterlingS: Urban Fantasy is this era’s answwer to Epic Fantasy. The world is smaller and more local, so we want our fantasy to be as well. #ufchat

10:11 pm AuthorWilliam: When I think of UF I think of the grit and vibration of the modern urban landscape crossed with the ancient feel of the fantastic #UFchat

10:11 pm deborahblake: @leapetra I live in the country and I beg to differ *bwah ha ha* #UFchat

10:11 pm leapetra: Any one can see a fairy ring in the country, but to find one in a city park? #ufchat

10:11 pm UF_Chat: @leapetra I think the city is to do with denser population – hiding is easier. #UFchat

10:12 pm jimnduncan: And how modern is modern? You set a paranormal story in 1950’s NYC, is it UF? #ufchat

10:12 pm UF_Chat: @AuthorWilliam Kind of modern mythic then? #UFchat

10:12 pm tasmin21: @jimnduncan Good question. At what point do you slip into “alternate history” instead? #UFChat

10:12 pm UF_Chat: @jimnduncan Do we then have to call it historical UF? This is where we start getting fuzzy… #UFchat

10:12 pm StaciaKane: @CarolynCrane Thass right. I crashed the internets with mah badass powerz. #UFChat

10:13 pm CarolynCrane: I’d add that UF is a vibrant, heavily evolving genre. A vortex of creativity. Psyched to be part of it. #UFchat

10:13 pm HoodedMan: @UF_Chat @deborahblake Of course, where is my mind today… thank you #UFchat

10:13 pm deborahblake: @jimnduncan I don’t think so. If it is set in 1950’s, it is something else. #UFchat

10:13 pm LaylaMessner: @AuthorWilliam I like that def. @JSterlingS Not sure I agree about the world being smaller. #UFChat

10:13 pm leapetra: Russian movie Night Watch and the books it’s based on are great examples of UF #ufchat

10:13 pm UF_Chat: @deborahblake Would love to hear the take on that! Altho rural fantasy doesn’t have as contemporary a ring.. #UFchat

10:13 pm AuthorWilliam: @UF_Chat For me, yes. Its the juxtaposition of the ancient and the now slammed so close together that pops for me. #UFchat

10:14 pm valerievaldes: @tasmin21 I’d say there can be alternate world urban fantasy, some of Kim Harrison’s books for example. #UFchat

10:14 pm HC_Palmquist: @StaciaKane That and the 1969 black Chevelle….*drools* #UFchat

10:14 pm UF_Chat: @StaciaKane Is you here? Wee have a few minutes so you can catch your breath. Definitions all over! #UFchat

10:14 pm HoodedMan: I’ wouldn’t define my stories as anything, or any genre, but this is the closest I’ve come #UFchat

10:14 pm JSterlingS: @tasmin21 Alternate History is when you begin messing with the normal human timeline. #UFChat

10:14 pm HC_Palmquist: RT @AuthorWilliam: @UF_Chat For me, yes. Its the juxtaposition of the ancient and the now slammed so close together that pops for me. #UFchat

10:14 pm snowppl: Most of the US pop is urban, so even small towns can be considered for UF #ufchat

10:15 pm tasmin21: @valerievaldes That was one of the things I was thinking of. Ilona Andrews’ series, too. #UFChat

10:15 pm LaylaMessner: I think UF says, “what if there’s magic in the world?” Whereas ‘classic’ epic fantasy says, “what if there were a magical world?” #UFChat

10:15 pm deborahblake: @valerievaldes Kim Harrison’s books are still considered UF. Doesn’t have to be “exactly” our world. #UFchat

10:15 pm UF_Chat: . @JSterlingS stacia’s books (being discussed today) start changing history in the 1990’s. #UFchat

10:15 pm tadbo: RT @HC_Palmquist: To me, Urban Fantasy is a paranormal or fantastical story set in modern day, urban society. #UFchat

10:15 pm JSterlingS: @LaylaMessner Twitter proves this world is smaller. The fact that all of us can easily talk is evidence. #UFChat

10:15 pm theworldamongus: RT@AuthorWilliam: @UF_Chat For me, yes. Its the juxtaposition of the ancient and the now slammed so close together that pops for me. #UFchat

10:15 pm UF_Chat: RT @LaylaMessner: think UF says, “what if magic in world?” Whereas classic epic fantasy says, “what if there were a magical world?” #UFchat

10:16 pm AuthorWilliam: RT @LaylaMessner: I think UF says, “what if there’s magic in the world?” Whereas ‘classic’ epic fantasy says, “what if there were a magical world?” #UFChat

10:16 pm CarolynCrane: @LaylaMessner Oh, right! Though, Illona Andrews screws that up a little. Hmm. #UFchat

10:16 pm deborahblake: My UF is set in a world mostly like ours, but with obvious differences and a few years ahead #UFchat

10:16 pm UF_Chat: @jimnduncan Agree – altho specifically so when not hidden. Who’s to say they’re just not known now? πŸ˜‰ #UFchat

10:16 pm LaylaMessner: @JSterlingS Hmm, interesting point. Not sure I agree exactly, but won’t get off topic :). #UFChat

10:17 pm HoodedMan: I write about what i see as the real world, quite frankly, & what’s currently perceived as paranormal IS an integral part of that #UFchat

10:17 pm inkgypsy: RT @tadbo: RT @HC_Palmquist: To me, Urban Fantasy is a paranormal or fantastical story set in modern day, urban society. #UFchat

10:17 pm Ben_Aaronovitch: The other question is whether the mascarade is intact #UFChat

10:17 pm rixshep: rt @LaylaMessner UF says, “what if magic in real world?” ‘Classic’ fantasy says, “what if there were a magical world?” #UFChat / Good pnt!

10:17 pm tasmin21: The thing is, no matter what definition you settle on, you’re gonna find popular exceptions to every rule. We’re a dynamic genre. #UFChat

10:18 pm leapetra: You don’t have to be hidden. Humans by nature are going to ignore things they don’t comprehend. #ufchat

10:18 pm salvationdancin: RT @LaylaMessner: I think UF says, “what if there’s magic in the world?” Whereas ‘classic’ epic fantasy says, “what if there were a magical world?” #UFChat

10:18 pm LaylaMessner: @AuthorWilliam I like that #UFChat

10:18 pm leapetra: Most humans anyway πŸ™‚ #ufchat

10:19 pm HC_Palmquist: RT @tasmin21: The thing is, no matter what definition you settle on, you’re gonna find popular exceptions to every rule. We’re a dynamic genre. #UFChat

10:19 pm deborahblake: RT @tasmin21: The thing is, no matter what definition you settle on, youre gonna find exceptions to every rule. a dynamic genre. #UFchat

10:19 pm rixshep: #UFchat – Saberhagen’s “Empire of East/Swords” fantasy takes place in OUR world in far future, w/scientific explanation. So, does it count?

10:19 pm UF_Chat: RT @leaptra You don’t have to be hidden. Humans by nature are going to ignore things they don’t comprehend.– Good point! #UFchat

10:19 pm Ben_Aaronovitch: Also whether magic follows the laws of thermodynamics. #UFChat

10:20 pm UF_Chat: I love that UF is so flexible in this way – room for all tastes & variants while still obviously UF. #UFchat

10:20 pm LaylaMessner: I think UF also has the potential to be modern myth – bringing our “gods” (and other mythic creatures) home, as it were #UFChat

10:20 pm HoodedMan: @leapetra Humans today are ignoring a lot of the world, the Magick & the perceived paranormal. I just write about what i experience #UFchat

10:20 pm leapetra: @rixshep I think most UF now is considered to be “modern time” like 20 years past or present from now (my observation) #ufchat

10:20 pm UF_Chat: @Ben_Aaronovitch That’s a slightly difficult area – gets into alt history. #UFchat

10:20 pm deborahblake: @jimnduncan Most novels cross genres…thriller, fantasy, romance–which is the driving force for the plot and the characters? #UFchat

10:20 pm rixshep: rt @deborahblake @tasmin21: Thing is, no matter what def. you settle on, youre gonna find exceptions to every rule. a dynamic genre. #UFchat

10:20 pm CameronHaleyUF: It’s like porn — maybe you can’t define it, but you know it when you see it! #UFchat

10:20 pm JSterlingS: @rixshep Sounds almost like Sci-fan. #UFchat

10:21 pm StaciaKane: @UF_Chat Be on momentarily. Arriving at BN. #UFChat

10:21 pm Ben_Aaronovitch: @LaylaMessner Good point. #UFChat

10:21 pm HC_Palmquist: @UF_Chat @NLGervasio & I were just discussing how UF really has no limits except for the amounts of graphic sex. #UFchat

10:21 pm tasmin21: *snerk* RT @CameronHaleyUF: Its like porn — maybe you cant define it, but you know it when you see it! #UFChat

10:21 pm LaylaMessner: Haha! RT @CameronHaleyUF: Its like porn — maybe you cant define it, but you know it when you see it! #UFChat

10:21 pm UF_Chat: @CameronHaleyUF LOL! Kind of yes! #UFchat

10:22 pm leapetra: @HoodedMan I understand. Grew up in a haunted house. most ppl will never understand what that is really like #ufchat

10:22 pm UF_Chat: We are in countdown till our Q&A with Stacia. Let me explain how it will work so we can start when she’s ready. #UFchat

10:22 pm marirandomities: Just saw the #ufchat on the stream and squeaked! Does this chat happen every Sunday? What’s today’s topic? Hope I’m not too late… #ufchat

10:22 pm UF_Chat: I?ll ask Stacia questions by # (to help track – I have a lot) but feel free to add own if relates! Open/random Q&A at end. ? #UFchat

10:23 pm Ben_Aaronovitch: @leapetra Damn those quantums. #ufchat

10:23 pm UF_Chat: @marirandomities Just started 20 mins ago. : Yes every week now. #UFchat

10:23 pm snowppl: Wow! Sex already? Lol #ufchat

10:23 pm HC_Palmquist: @marirandomities This is the first one! Welcome. We’re discussing the definition of UF and having Q&A with @StaciaKane! #UFchat

10:23 pm leapetra: @marirandomities What is UF and Q&A with an author; #ufchat

10:23 pm HoodedMan: Defining art in genres is inherently wrong. It’s just labeling again #UFchat

10:23 pm GargoylePhan: I’m not a big rule-follower, so I like kinda hazy genres where pretty much anything goes #UFchat

10:23 pm tasmin21: @JSterlingS And dear gods, if we try to decide if it’s PN or UF, we’ll be here till next doomsday. #UFChat

10:23 pm NLGervasio: @JSterlingS That’s exactly what we were saying. lol @HC_Palmquist #UFchat

10:24 pm deborahblake: @JSterlingS Actually, there is UF with graphic sex, too. Depends on whether or not the sex & romance are the “reason” for the story. #UFchat

10:24 pm UF_Chat: Absentee RT @Twilight2000 Teen (only reads UF) describes as “someone I can walk down the street & run into” -but with magic. #UFchat

10:24 pm jenn_benn: Re: urban vs. rural, maybe reviewer @paulgoatallen‘s use of “paranormal fantasy” is a more appropriate blanket term for the genre #UFChat

10:24 pm UF_Chat: @snowppl You knew it was going to happen. LOL #UFchat

10:24 pm Ben_Aaronovitch: If we’re having sex can I introduce nazis now cf: the Atrocity Archive. #UFChat

10:24 pm leapetra: @JSterlingS And dear gods, if we try to decide if its PN or UF, well be here till next doomsday. > Look at the book covers. πŸ™‚ #ufchat

10:25 pm RedBalloonBooks: okay, so maybe it’s because it’s the end of the day at the end of the week, but I can’t figure out: what is #ufchat about?

10:25 pm UF_Chat: @deborahblake I think UF allows for graphic sex – not always a given but some ‘grit’ is expected. #UFchat

10:25 pm turnfeel33: Sorry, a little late. Questions ready to fire #UFchat

10:25 pm deborahblake: @UF_Chat Good definition, except she could run into me, and I’m *magic* πŸ™‚ #UFchat

10:25 pm HC_Palmquist: @deborahblake Really? I didn’t know that. So @Jeaniene_Frost would be UF instead of Paranormal Romance? #UFchat

10:25 pm marirandomities: @HC_Palmquist Thanks for the welcome and info! Nice to meet you. πŸ™‚ #ufchat

10:25 pm UF_Chat: @leapetra Hence why we need a weekly chat – so much variation & possibility. Don’t get started on YA versions! #UFchat

10:26 pm deborahblake: @HC_Palmquist I’m not sure–haven’t read her. But I think she’s usually located with either one. #UFchat

10:26 pm rixshep: @JSterlingS: @rixshep Sounds almost like Sci-fan. #UFchat / Is there distinct diff between urban and scifi fantasy? Blurry lines? #UFchat

10:26 pm yobyh: RT @editorialdept: re: far future w/ scientific explanation – “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” – Arthur C Clarke #ufchat

10:26 pm LaylaMessner: Great discussion re: UF vs Paranormal Romance here – http://community.livejournal.com/fangs_fur_fey/476174.html #UFChat

10:27 pm InvasiveNotes: RT @HoodedMan: Defining art in genres is inherently wrong. It’s just labeling again #UFchat

10:27 pm HC_Palmquist: @UF_Chat Awesome idea!!! Thanks! #UFchat

10:27 pm StaciaKane: Okay, I’m here! Sheesh! Stupid weather! #UFChat

10:27 pm UF_Chat: @turnfeel33 Jump in. We’re waiting for our guest to be ready & definitions of UF rule. #UFchat

10:27 pm deborahblake: Truth is, much of the time UF and PR are very similar. Depends on who is doing the defining! #UFchat

10:27 pm HoodedMan: I write stories, not genres #UFchat

10:27 pm StaciaKane: Sorry everyone. #UFChat

10:27 pm snowppl: @UF_Chat I was warned! Haha sex should not be necessary for a story. If it doesn’t fit, bye bye! #ufchat

10:27 pm LaylaMessner: Yay, Stacia’s here! #UFChat

10:27 pm Ben_Aaronovitch: Isn’t it PNR=woman has back to camera. UF=woman faces camera on cover. #UFChat

10:27 pm HillaryJacques: Nature cannot stop @StaciaKane #UFchat

10:28 pm deborahblake: @StaciaKane Such dedication! Catch your breath πŸ™‚ #UFchat

10:28 pm jimnduncan: I agree. Focus of the plot is likely what counts the most when determining genre/sub-genre. #ufchat

10:28 pm UF_Chat: @HoodedMan Agree – best to write stories not genres. But once written good to know where falls to help potential readers find you. #UFchat

10:28 pm editorialdept: HA! Sadly, accurate RT @Ben_Aaronovitch: Isnt it PNR=woman has back to camera. UF=woman faces camera on cover. #ufchat

10:29 pm StaciaKane: @tasmin21 Ha! Totally. The worst part is the storm had actually ended, then one last lightning/thunder right overhead fried the net. #UFChat

10:29 pm AuthorWilliam: RT @UF_Chat: @HoodedMan Agree – best to write stories not genres. But once written good to know where falls to help potential readers find you. #UFchat

10:29 pm UF_Chat: @jimnduncan Agree – that’s the whole F (‘fantasy’) part coming last thing. The spec part is most important. Place is 2ndary. #UFchat

10:29 pm JSterlingS: @rixshep Sci-fan tends to have high tech (laser rifles) along with magic (fireballs, demon summoners). While UF uses current tech. #UFchat

10:29 pm HillaryJacques: @Ben_Aaronovitch *haha* Isn’t it PNR=woman has back to camera. UF=woman faces camera on cover #UFChat

10:29 pm UF_Chat: @StaciaKane Are you ready for questions? #UFchat

10:29 pm turnfeel33: Stacia good thing we all love you here *wink* #UFchat

10:54 pm deborahblake: @AuthorWilliam There is plenty of YA UF–but I think we’re talking about that on another week. #UFchat

10:54 pm UF_Chat: @AuthorWilliam YA isn’t a genre – it’s a marketing bracket. There is YA UF, YA chicklit, YA action/adventure etc #UFchat

10:56 pm deborahblake: @rixshep Sounds neat. When did it come out and who was in it? #UFchat

10:56 pm StaciaKane: @UF_Chat Hee, yeah, it has. Haunted Week actually takes place over Halloween; Oct 28-Nov 3 every year. So H-ween was part the cause #UFChat

10:56 pm UF_Chat: Everybody OK to go over time a bit here? We got a late connect to @StaciaKane & I’m good to hang around for a bit if all are. #UFchat
